What is the Price of a Postage Stamp in Australia?

In late September, Australia Post announced an annual after-tax loss of $222 million, citing a structural decline in mail delivery. As a result, the company signaled its intention to hike the price of postage stamps. First, the company had to obtain approval from the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission, and then the government approved the change to introduce different speeds of letter delivery. However, Fahour has yet to comment on the new pricing structure on Twitter.

The rise in stamp prices has been one of the major factors contributing to the slowdown in mail deliveries in Australia. Letter delivery rates in Australia continue to decline, with Australia Post predicting that letter delivery volumes will drop by nine to ten percent every year from 2019 to 2020. Growing numbers of delivery points are affecting the efficiency of the postal system. In a recent video posted on YouTube, the company explains the changes.

The standard letter stamp will cost $1.10 in 2020, but larger letters will go up by an additional ten cents. In addition, the new stamps will also have higher value. The higher price will be capped by a year of inflation, after a decade of doubled prices. In 2009, a standard letter cost 55 cents, while it cost four cents at the start of the decimal currency era.
